EVA EIS: MARBLED WORKS OF THE ZELLNER FAMILY

German, A4 size, many pictures, extensive transcriptions of historic sources. 220 pages. Munich 2009

MARBLED WORKS OF THE ZELLNER FAMILY by EVA EIS. During the 18th century the painter Georg Andreas Zellner and his sons Franz and Georg Caspar had become famous for their skilfully marbled works. All three of them were well known polychromers throughout the Oberpfalz as well as Ober- and Niederbayern (Bavaria). Many details of their life and work can be found in the Archives. Estimates, bills and contracts that have survived until now give an impression of the working process of that time. Similarities as well as characteristic deviations in the appearance of the marble imitations are shown. By use of geologic methodology the marblings are described and correlations to natural rock structures are presented. The investigation of cross sections and pigment samples indicate that all marblings have a similar layer build-up, while design as well as paint application reveal individual styles among the three painters. The study of many works ascribed to the Zellner`s was the basis for the analysis. The information from archives, literature and observations by the author have been summarized in a catalogue, which has been printed in extracts in this thesis.
