Caput Mortuum

Caput Mortuum is a unique brown with a violet tint. Mixing would make those dark tones when mixing dark red with black. Chemically, it is particularly pure ferric oxide (Fe2O3). It can be divided into two groups: natural and synthetic Caput Mortuum. In terms of color, there are no decisive differences that indicate the origin.
 
Natural Caput Mortuum is found, like the other iron oxides in many parts of the world. At times, the Persian Red was of importance. In general, Caput Mortuum applies to typical opaque pigments. However, despite the depth of shade, the natural finds often have a very hard to sandy character, which may well be desirable for wall techniques.
 
Synthetic Caput Mortuum was acquired very early by the alchemists. Ferrous vitriol (ferrous sulfate) was heated in retorts to the glow, whereupon sulfur trioxide escaped, which together with water gave sulfuric acid. These violet-brown residues were therefore originally a waste product, but then very much appreciated as pigments, as it was a highly pure ferric oxide without disturbing admixtures. Finally, in the middle of the 19th century, artificial iron oxides began to be produced industrially. While the lighter varieties were commonly referred to as Mars Red at the time, the darkest ones are still called Caput Mortuum today.
 
All Caput Mortuum varieties are indefinitely durable and suitable for all painting techniques. For soft  pigment grades in aqueous binder systems, it is sufficient to work the powder with a palette knife; in oil, it should generally be ground with the glass muller, except for the smallest quantities for immediate consumption. It is interesting that the color of the pigment turns into a richer and slightly warmer shade when oil is added. In tempera technique, as with most other earth colors, there is a considerable gain in depth after varnishing. The violet-tinged character of these pigments is particularly evident in white blends and astonishingly, beautiful violet can be mixed with the addition of ultramarine or cobalt blue! The effect is even more interesting if, for example, a thin blue glaze is added on top of a tempera layer.

 

Falun Red / Falu Rödfärg

The swedish city of Falun once was famous for the largest copper mines in Northern Europe.Copper extraction from ore provides a violet red iron oxide as a by-product. The Swedes have successfully protected their wooden houses with their local pigments and other regional materials such as linseed oil and rye flour for centuries. Still today, Caput Mortuum is made in this way. We offer Caput Mortuum in different shades (#48700, #48710, #48750). The iron oxide (#48220) has a similar color.

INGREDIENTS

· 67 % water
· 2 % ferrous sulfate = iron (II) sulfate (#64200)
· 5 % wheat flour or rye flour (typ 1150)
· 18 % Iron Oxide pigment (as desired #48060–#48600, #48700–#48750)
· 8 % Linseed Oil, natural, cold-pressed (#73020)

METHOD
First, put the water in a big enough pot, then stir in the ferrous sulfate and bring to a boil. Mix the wheat or rye flour with cold water until it becomes a lump-free, runny pulp. Slowly mix in the flour puree into the boiling water and simmer gently for 5 minutes, continuously stirring. Bit by bit, stir the pigment (originally Caput Mortuum reddish) into the mixture and simmer gently for another 15 minutes, continuously stirring. Take the pot off the stove and work the linseed oil into the mixture. Slowly add the oil in a long, thin trickle, strongly stirring all the time to avoid the formation of an oily film. The calculated spreading rate is about 100-150 m2/ml per coat.

NOTE
Adding 6 % Zinc Sulphide (#46350) will enhance the protection in exterior areas.

Today Hansa Yellow is often used for ecological reasons as a replacement for the toxic, leaded chrome yellow. It is an organic dye from the group of monoazo pigments. The first Hansa Yellow, Pigment Yellow 1, was launched in 1910. The azo pigments have been continuously improved over the decades. Thus, the varieties that are common today are difficult to compare with the dyes known at that time as "Hansa Yellow".

Hansa Yellows are characterized by a very good opacity. The light fastness is in full tone 8. It can be applied in watercolor, tempera, oil and acrylic paint.
