The natural organic pigment with the fantastic name „Dragon’s Blood“ or „Sanguis draconis“ is a resinous exudation from the fruit or bark of Dracaena cinnabari and other rattan palms. Our Dragon’s Blood Emzolo (also called Edah Amsello) comes from Socotra, the Yemeni island in the Arabian Sea. Socotra, the main source for dragon’s blood, used to be an important early trading centre. Dragon’s blood is imported in form of cylindrical rolls, wrapped in palm leaves and available in small balls, lumps, cakes or plates. The constituents of dragon’s blood are resin acids, alcohols, and esters. The resin itself is quite dark and of more brownish than red color. When ground it makes a bright, crimson-colored powder. It is entirely soluble in alcohol, except for the presence of small amounts of mechanical impurities such as vegetable fiber or sand. In ancient times, the red resin was used as medicine, incense, varnish and dye. 18th century violinmakers used Dragon’s blood as a source for varnish. Today it belongs to the most popular violin varnish pigments.
