Due to the wide distribution of lava and pumice rocks in Italy, the Etruscans and later the Romans developed a special technique of working with mortar. The mortar used was a mixture of terra pozzuolana, burnt and slaked lime. Mortar mixed with 1 volume of slaked lime and 7 volumes of terra pozzuolana gives a very slow hardening mass that behaves similarly to the historical original.
