Rosin Oil is the preferred varnish for rendering transparent surfaces, such as violin grounds. It used to be distilled from turpentine in the presence of oxygen, which can produce dangerous peroxides in the residue.
This type of production has ceased. As a substitute, we are now making a similar product from raw colophony (Rosin) and spirits of gum turpentine. Turpentine Rosin Oil is made by cooking colophony, and dissolving it in hot spirits of gum turpentine.
