Wood tar is the name for the viscous to semi-solid, brown to deep black liquid that is produced during the distillation of wood, especially resin-rich woods. Wood tar was used for a long time in wooden shipbuilding to preserve wood and cordage. Beech wood tar is still used today as an attractant for black and red deer at wallows.
