The Himba, a semi-nomadic pastoralist people from the Kunene region in northern Namibia, are known for their distinctive reddish body paint made from otjize – a paste of ground hematite, butterfat, and aromatic resins. The intense red symbolizes beauty, earth, and blood – the essence of life – while also providing effective protection against UV radiation and insects. The red mineral is traditionally mined by women from a single mine called Ovihende, a sloping shaft about ten to twelve meters deep located between Sesfontein and Opuwo. The hematite extracted there is a strongly staining, intensely dark violet-red iron oxide ore.
