Aragonit hat sehr ähnliche Eigenschaften wie Calcit, weshalb es auch bei der Herstellung von Geigenlacken verwendet wird. Benannt wurde es nach seinen Fundstellen in der Provinz Aragonien in Nordost-Spanien. Dieses Mineral ist von gleicher chemischer Zusammensetzung wie Calcit und tritt in magnetischen Gesteinen auf. Allerdings ist es im Gegensatz zu Calcit von rhombischer Raumstruktur.
