On the Southern side of the Alps there are numerous occurances of very old Earth colors. These reservoirs have been preserved by overlapping volcanic rock layers. Venetian Red from this particular region can be used for the production of Cinabrese, a term for fresh tone color in early Renaissance painting in Florence.
