Natural mother of pearl or nacre is produced as an inner shell layer by molluscs and snails. By sanding and polishing the matte outer layer one gets pieces, that look like pearl-buttons. Colors range, depending on the clam, from white to green, red or even black. Mother of pearl can be used to add a subtle shimmer in plaster and paints. They are very weather resistant and lightfast.
