It is a good solvent for rubber, resins, fats and oils. Xylene is sparingly soluble in water, readily soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, gasoline, etc. When working with xylene, ensure good ventilation (fume hood or exhaust system) and wear protective gloves. Is hazardous to water even in small quantities.
