A vegetable gum produced from the exudation of certain leguminous plants (Astragalus tragacanta) that grow wild throughout the Middle East. More viscous than gum arabic and easily soluble in cold water, it is used as a binder in tempera, gouache and watercolor colors. In the manufacture of pastels it can be used to mix pigments.
