Firebrake ZB is a multifunctional fire retardant for plastic and rubber compounds. Because Firebrake ZB releases its water of hydration at temperatures above 290°C (554°F), it can be used in systems requiring high processing temperatures. Firebrake ZB has a refractive index similar to that of most polymer systems, so it retains considerable light transmission and allows the use of a small amount of pigment. Firebrake can be used as a flame retardant for paints. The layer formed when paints containing firebrake burn develops a solid soot, which limits further burning and also reduces resin dripping. It is poorly soluble in water, and in most synthetic resin binders it results in only slight turbidity.
