Turpineol is obtained from turpentine oil and purified by fractionation. It is a clear, colorless, ethereal liquid of peculiarly high viscosity, which almost resembles glycerin. For this very reason, this material, which is actually used to perfume soaps because of its lilac odor, is also popular with artists who like to paint only with turpentine oil and prevent the undesirable flowing of the brushstroke by adding turpineol. A further advantage is that oil paints painted with it dry to a full matte finish.
