The addition of a little ammonia increases the ph and accelerates the blackening of silver. Sodium borohydride dissolves in water or ethyl alcohol, in weak alkaline solution it reacts, slowly bleaching everything around it, developing hydrogen. When working with sodium borohydride, care must be taken to provide good ventilation and to dissipate the hydrogen gases produced. CAUTION: Sodium borohydride reacts very quickly in acids, which is why the hydrogen produced can ignite very easily!
