Receta: Paper Ground for Canvas

This ground was developed to achieve a surface on canvas that is similar to watercolor paper and can be painted with watercolors.

Procesamiento

Paso 1: For preparing the ground 20 g of Methocel™ A4M (#63671), 100 g of Chalk from Champagne (#58000) and 100 g of Arbocel® BC 1000 (#59750) are weighed into a bucket. The dry components are mixed thoroughly.
Paso 2: Then add 1 Liter of water to the mix and stir it until it is homogenous. Now the ground should be left to rest for approximately 6 hours to allow the cellulose glue to dissolve.
Paso 3: The ground is applied on a raw, stretched canvas. Use a spatula and spread the ground in a thin and even layer. After drying, apply another layer. We recommend to apply at least two layers.
Paso 4: When applied in two thin layers, the amount as described above should cover approximately 1 m². The ground cannot be stored for long, but the dry mix can be prepared and kept in a tightly closed bucket until it is needed.
Paso 5: This ground is very absorbent. Watercolors will spread similar like on unglued paper or rice paper. To prevent that, the ground can be primed with glue. For the glue solution, use 5 g of the Gelatine Restoration 3 (#63040) and soak it in 95 g cold water. After 1 hour the glue can be dissolved in a bain marie with max. 60°C. This 5% glue solution is spread in a thin and even coat onto the paper ground.
